GERD, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease, is a painful condition where stomach acid reflux causes irritation in the esophagus, which runs from the throat to the stomach. The acid can cause a burning sensation and have an intense flavor — it can also cause long-term damage to the esophagus. An alkaline diet is purported by some doctors and nutritionists to help with GERD, as it focuses on alkaline-producing foods instead of acidic ones. The nutrients found in alkaline foods such as vegetables and fruits may help with soothing the system and building up general health.
