Water Water Watermelon!
Summertime brings a bounty of fresh, delicious, in-season fruits and vegetables, and one of our favorite summer staples is juicy, hydrating watermelon! One thing that makes watermelon such a healthy choice is its high water content; they are approximately 90% water. They’re also a nutritional powerhouse, loaded with vitamins A, C and B6, antioxidants and lycopene, as well as some potassium.
Watermelon is fat free, low in sodium and while it has naturally-occurring sugar, it is a great low-calorie snack or dessert, with only about 40 calories in a cup. Its high lycopene content gives watermelon an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory quality, and health experts link lycopene to heart and bone health. While our favorite way to enjoy watermelon is just in huge bites straight from a freshly-sliced wedge, we also love adding it to fresh summer recipes. Here, Greatist.com puts together more than 30 ways to enjoy fresh, in-season watermelon at every meal! Our favorites include a cooling, hydrating gazpacho, the curried crab and watermelon salad, a very hydrating cucumber and watermelon salad, the watermelon mojito and watermelon coconut cocktail!
However you eat it, enjoy watermelon all summer long and feel healthier with each bite!
